GIVING BACK Maryvale
Los Angeles Orphan Asylum is a 501(c) 3 agency founded in 1856 and has
been serving children of the Greater Los Angeles area for the past 150
years. It is a licensed home for girls who are placed here through the
Department of Children and Family Services. These children have been removed
from their homes for child abuse and or neglect, some have just arrived
and others have been here for years. This facility provides housing, meals,
an education and many opportunities these girls would otherwise not be
exposed to. Myself and a few close friends created an extension of Maryvale called Maryvale Angels. With your help we raise enough money to bring Christmas to the girls of Maryvale through your generous donations and volunteers! A few weeks before Christmas we organize a party so the girls can celebrate the holiday season. There they get to cut loose on the dance floor, play games, take fun photos and of coarse pig out at the buffet thanks to Wolf Gang Puck's donations. But they are most excited when Santa arrives and gives them a gift from their wish list. Thanks to you, your generous donations and volunteers we have had a huge success and look forward to this years event! ![]() BookPALS is a unique all-volunteer literacy program. Professional actors visit public elementary schools in local neighborhoods to read aloud to children every week. The world of literacy and literature is then opened to these children by the very people who can make books come alive through their talent and training. Thanks to this program I have had the pleasure of reading at many local schools, libraries and venues that sponsor special events like Dr. Seuss's birthday! My
next venture will take me to Stoner Ave. Elementary School. We
the Children, a special program of BookPALS, makes reading and writing
a first person experience for children attending schools in at-risk communities.
Each child involved has the opportunity to write and illustrate his/her
own family story. Throughout this semester long project I, along with
many other volunteers, will be guiding the students as they create their
books. Finished books are bound and include a photo and personal biography
of the child/author. Two copies of each book are published: one for the
child to take home, and one for the child's school library. We the Children
is a memorable experience for each child and parent. They build self-confidence,
pride, and a greater understanding of their families. ![]() Donate to The American Cancer Society Volunteers needed: December 26, 2004 Tsunami Relief
"Hi Phi Phi is
a community-based initiative of local Koh Phi Phi residents and non-Thais,
working to help the people of Phi Phi rebuild their lives after the Indian
Ocean tsunami on December 26, 2004. Islanders and volunteers have worked
side by side to clean streets and reefs, repair homes and bring back smiles
to Thailand's most beautiful tropical paradise. Although much long-term
work remains ahead, Phi Phi is back on its feet and ready for business."
I was blessed with the opportunity of volunteering under this program during my downtime while filming in Thailand. It was a life changing experience that I will cherish forever. If you have the opportunity, even if only for a day, "that's all it takes, but a difference it makes."
